OOW 2010 Tuesday Afternoon

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesThe afternoon had one of the sessions I knew I would enjoy the most before I even got here. It was Carly Millsaps “Thinking clearly about performance”. The reason I anticipated a great presentation is not just Carlys knowledge in the area, but also the fact that he is fast becoming the best presenter in the Oracle area. This presentation was no different, he covered a lot of topics and still made it seem like there ws no rush […]

OOW 2010 Tuesday Morning

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesThe morning was kicked off with a presentation about new features with interactive reports in APEX 4.0. A demo shows how to create an icon enabled report for  basic product list report. Every product is represented by a picture in a grid that shpws a few images per “row”. A more detailed version of the icon view was also created where each row had a picture and a number of details about it on ever “row”. These are all […]

OOW 2010 Monday Afternoon

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesThe afternoon was kicked off with a presentation on using APEX in large projects by Dimitri Gielis. These re my notes for what Dimitri told us. Many people feels that APEX cannot be used for anything larger than a singe developers app.  Sumneva uses EC2 for both demo and development work with their clients. They have readymade scripts to create new projects that sets up filesystem directories, APEX application, and subversion. They’re finding that the agile project methodology works […]

OOW 2010 Monday Morning

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesThis will be a APEX only day. The day starts with two APEX 4.0 presentations. First up was a presentations about dynamic actions in APEX held by Anthony Raynor. Dynamic acttions is a declarative way (in 4.0) to use javascript to enhance clientside behavior of an APEX application. It is used for things such as disabling some fields on the page in some situations. Using it is done by defining four things: When Condition Action Affected elements For example […]

OOW 2010 Keynote

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesThe keynote started with some general hints on things to do at the conference and things that can help make the experience even better. After that safra Catz gave out the excellence awards.Next up was Ann Livermore om HP to talk about how important Oracle is for them. she threw out lots of numbers of it, one that stuck with me is that 40% of all Oracle licenses is for HP hardware. They have 300 000 employees. my guess […]

OOW 2010 Starts

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesI arrived to San Francisco yesterday and OOW kicked off today. The efficiency at the registration alone was impressive. The lines we’re very long, but it probably took less than 15 minutes to get through it. This post will essentially be a dump of notes from the sessions I attended. The first session was the start of the APEX symposium. It was supposed to feature Scott Spendolini and an overview of APEX 4.0. He had been delayed so the […]

Two good posts that are related

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesI like when a blog I follow links to a blogpost I have already seen and that I thought was a gem. I used to happen quite frequently when Cathy Sierras blog was active, but it still happens. The reason it is nice is that I like it is that if the first post was really good, you can almost guarantee that I will like the next writer I follow that discusses the same thing. This week it was […]

Apex 4.0 moves to apex.oracle.com

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesIn case you haven’t noticed already, David Peake’s blog just announced that APEX 4.0 moves one step closer to become available for download. It is now the release that powers apex.oracle.com. http://dpeake.blogspot.com/2010/06/apex-40-comes-to-httpapexoraclecom.html This is good news as it shows that the release is getting close to be completed. Upgrading apex.oracle.com is usually one of the last public steps before a release becomes available to download. TweetShareSharePin0 Shares

The case for CASE

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesI’ve just uploaded my latest article. This time it is a look at the SQL keyword CASE. It’s power is often not fully appreciated. It is much more flexible and powerful than you may expect from just taking a quick glance in the official documentation. The article is located here. Please post comments and questions here. Interested Transaction List

TweetShareSharePin0 SharesInterested Transaction List is the method through which Oracle keeps track of which transaction has updated which row in a block. I wrote an article about it a while back where I show how the ITL works and how it impacts performance in certain situations. The basis of the article is a page locking scenario I encountered. Sure, page locking is not possible in Oracle, but an ITL wait is very similar to a page lock.  You find the […]
